My wife and I went to this place with expectation. First, we expected it to be expensive. It was exorbitant. Especially the beverages. Front side of house demonstrated reasonably competent wait staff. The food was at best mediocre. We ordered a souffle appetizer. It was dead cold. Back to the kitchen. Later it appeared and was hot. Wife has always loved Dover Sole. When it arrived it was so grossly overcooked it looked like leather. Sure enough it was inedible. Figuring they couldn't screw up prime rib and baked potato I went for it in spite of the price.
On arrival the beautifully decorated baked spud was dead cold and so was the meat. When re-presented meat was at least medium and still not hot. It also had an odd brown color. Sous-vide was the comment from the server.
Potatoe was not hot either. I lost my appetite and left my wife to deal with the bill. She sat and sat and finally asked to settle up. Well, they could have done her the courtesy of telling her instead of wasting her time as she languished in limbo.
We would have been way better off with a fried bologna sandwich from Robert's Western World. Don't go there unless you a snob and have money to burn on food isn't very good.
Good place to be "seen" though. I just wanted a good meal. Excellence personified from the minute we walked in the door! The sushi was amazing and the rest for the food did not lack for excellence either! We made reservations and so happy we did. We wanted to try a new restaurant. Food, service and atmosphere is excellent!! Beautiful inside. By serendipity, we ate at The River House on Friday night. Without a reservation, there was a small wait accompanied by a well-built cocktail.
The service was welcoming and efficient. The menu, though not extensive, is diverse. Although, this has the lovely and cool vibe of a very upscale steak house, the fish and other offerings are excellent. There is also an intriguing sushi and dessert menu. The calamari were light, practically greaseless and served with a great aioli. The Caesar salad was large enough to share and deliciously fresh and not overdressed. The Chicken Milanese was a large meal with generous sides, but the chicken was so nicely and lightly prepared that it did not seem too much. The real winner here is the crab cakes!!!!!
These are really more of a cup of lump crab meat- molded and perfectly seasoned with a light hand- slightly breaded on the top and bottom. And the corn casserole is heavenly - fresh, sweet corn with a creamy gruyere topping. And on top of that, the social distancing for tables was unobtrusively handled and service was excellent.
There are an abundance of both new and old restaurants in downtown Nashville - and I think The River House might be my favorite overall. Being a sister restaurant to Brick Tops - which is a well known Nashville area chain - you can always count on excellent food and service. I've now been 3 times and each meal was perfect. It seems that many of the other downtown restaurants lack the consistency of River House when it comes to the food.
I wish I lived next door to this place because I would literally go multiple times each week. Own or manage this property? Claim your listing for free to respond to reviews, update your profile and much more. Worst restaurant ever! Review of The River House. Got a photo?
